The Evaluation of Erythrocyte Protoporphyrin Value in Healthy Person and of Its Relation in Iron Deficiency Anemia

Abstract
Recent investigations concerning the significance of porphyrins in erythrocytes indicate a need for a normal value in our country and a rapid quantitative assay, easily adaptable to routine clinical use.
The purpose of this study is in order to evaluate the relationship between the erythrocyte protoporphyrin and Iron deficiency anemia, especially comparable with the serum iron and total iron binding capacity those used for the evaluate the anemia, iron deficiency.
452 samples which from normal healthy adult person were analyzed to determine the erythrocyte protoprphyrin, together with Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, erythrocyte court, serum iron, serum total iron binding capacity and the percent of transferrin.
In the 452 specimens we have assayed, the erythocyte protoporphyrin concentrations ranged from 16 to 425 pg per100ml. and the mean value was 55pg per 100mi; a distribution plot had a peak at 48jug per 100ml. The normal range was 27 to 71 ug % and the mean value is 48ug % in males, and in females, the normal range was 36 to 77 ug % and the mean value is 55 ug % .
